This new year and new semester saw The Dean Daily grow immensely in many different ways. The Chiefs and Heads sought to create a professional, journalistic news organization that served Dean College students and the surrounding community. From our very first meeting, we created a mission and vision statement that did exactly that.
The Dean Daily class started, we had a group of 15 reporters that wrote weekly articles on topics ranging from sports, campus news, space, entertainment, and much more. With these reporters, The Dean Daily strived to achieve one of our goals of having daily news. Throughout this fall semester for over three months, there have been over 80 articles posted on this website.
Some of the highlights of the semester were covering Dean Field Hockey’s GNAC Championship run over two weeks with multiple different viewpoints of the main story. Another highlight was breaking news of a fire in Boomer’s and posting the story before the school was able to send out a formal announcement. This post by Jack Ruderman currently sits at 487 views and was the most viewed post in 24 hours that our site has seen.
Miro McIntyre Clere’s student spotlight on Sydnee Ramos gathered over 550 views after it was posted two weeks ago. Our organization also gained press accreditation to Boston
College Football, and I was the reporter that was able to be a press member at two of their games this past season.
Our Chief Editor, Maximilian Kent, led the club by managing the website and making a lot of advancements within the business of the organization. Within his project, Countdown to Launch, he created a partnership with “The Space Consortium” in Boston. There will be more updates on this next year along with a second episode of Countdown to Launch's video series coming out before the end of the year.
As Co-Chief Editor and Head of Sports, I have been able to help with the management of our website and all the new reporters we have. I also lead sports, so managing that page and giving out sports stories to other reporters has been a lot of what I’ve done this semester.
Our Head of Local News, Jacob Murtagh, created relationships with students outside of the organization to bring in more unique stories and points of view. He also reported on several local events.
Our Chief of Engagement, Sophie Hunter, worked in collaboration with the reporters to post to our Instagram page and spread the word about new stories. A highlight was the post about the fire at Boomer’s that helped alert the campus about what was going on.
Our Chief of Multimedia, Violet Figuerido, produced and hosted The Dean Daily’s first ever podcast along with an interview from our interim president, Darrell Kulesza.
Our Head of Advertising, Rachel Geddes, worked with local businesses to get ads for our paper and fund the activities that we have been able to accomplish this semester.
All of us working together have moved us closer to our goals of being a trusted, reliable source of information and the voice of student journalism at Dean College.
This semester was capped off with the printing and distribution of the physical newspaper that was created and designed by the Chiefs and Heads with the help of stories from our reporters. We printed 200 copies of our paper to spread around the Dean College campus and community. The paper was filled with stories about campus news, student spotlights, sports, local news, events, arts, entertainment, space, and politics.
As the holiday season approaches, we have also published holiday themed articles on our website to celebrate the season, but also the work of everyone who has made The Dean Daily what it is this year.
On behalf of The Dean Daily, thank you to everyone who has been a part of The Dean Daily this semester and has brought it to life! Also thank you to Bill Ingram and John Rooke for the continuous support and the funding for our physical paper
