The US and Dean College Celebrates National Coffee Day on September 29th!
For many New Englanders, the day begins in the drive-thru line of Dunkin. National Coffee Day falls on Tuesday, September 29th. National Coffee Day is not only appreciation for the drink, but also for the culture that surrounds it.
Dean College will be celebrating National Coffee Day its own way on Tuesday. Students can head to the Student Center from 10am to 12pm to enjoy a Coffee Bar, put on by the Student Government Association. The coffee bar is set to feature fall flavors and apple cider donuts!
"I love how events can bring people together, even if it's just through a coffee flavor!" Dean College first year Sarah Berube spoke about her excitement for the event.

The National Coffee Association, which is an organization that represents the U.S. coffee industry, has acknowledged September 29 as National Coffee Day since the 2000's. The history of coffee reaches much further back. Coffee plants originated in Africa and from there coffee eventually spread beyond Africa reaching Europe by the 17th century and later became an important global crop.
Coffee eventually became an important part of American culture as well. The Library of Congress describes coffee as a staple in the United States, and modern Americans continue to consume it at high rates. According to data cited by the Library of Congress from the National Coffee Association's 2024 trends report, 67% of the U.S. population consumed coffee in some form.
"I love coffee," Dean College junior Molly Devine spoke on her coffee routines. "I love a good, iced coffee with cream, sugar, and pumpkin swirl."
"Coffee should be a holiday," added Dean College junior Lydia Fernandes. "I love cold brew coffee with flavored syrups in it!"
While the exact origins of September 29th specifically remain unclear, the purpose of National Coffee Day is simple; to recognize a beverage with a history spanning centuries and cultures. From its roots in Africa to its place in modern American routines, coffee has become much more than a morning drink.
Many urban myths surround coffee, one being that coffee was actually discovered by goats around 800AD! The tale reads that a goat herder noticed his goats becoming particularly energetic after eating berries from a certain tree. After this discovery, Monks went on to brew drinks from those berries, and from there trade began!
While it is important to understand that these are just legends and myths regarding the plant, the culture that surrounds coffee is real and shaped into many of our daily routines. National Coffee Day will be observed on Tuesday. Don't forget to stop by the Student Center Concourse to celebrate your way!
