FRANKLIN, MA – The Dean College Bulldogs Football team lost to Mass Maritime Academy 28-0 on Saturday at Dale Lippert Field due to a 21-point explosion in the second quarter for the Buccaneers.

After a scoreless first quarter, Mass Maritime found themselves going for an early fourth down conversion only needing one yard to move the chains. The Buccaneers handed the ball off to running back Santiago Martin who not only got the first down, but reeled off a 56-yard touchdown to give his team a 7-0 lead after the PAT.

The first quarter itself saw defensive stands from both teams. The biggest play of the quarter came from Dean’s Corey Leverette, who blew up a run play and forced a fumble which was recovered by Drelend Carey on the Bulldogs’ own 36-yard line. “Obviously, the defense held their weight the whole game,” said senior Dempsey Brady when asked about the biggest takeaways from the game.

Following Martin’s touchdown in the second, Mass Maritime once found themselves in the redzone. An inside handoff was once again anticipated by the Bulldogs and this time it was Jerney Price that forced another fumble that was recovered by Dean, reinforcing the defensive prowess of the Bulldogs.

However, after a quick three and out on offense, Dean’s defense was called into question. After getting stopped multiple times, the Buccaneers were able to find some success through Brooks Moss. Moss started through the air with a 14-yard reception which set up Maritime at Dean’s 21-yard line. After a 15-yard penalty on the offense, The Buccaneers fed the hot hand in Moss. Moss took a handoff, turned up field and never looked back, a 36-yard rushing touchdown to give Mass Maritime a 14-0 lead. The Buccaneers kept piling on the pressure in the 2nd quarter, Zach Proctor was the weapon of choice as he took three rushes for a total of 20 yards to Mass Maritimes 41. After finding success on the ground, the Buccaneers shifted gears mid-drive and the gamble paid off in a big way. Evan Pierce only completed three passes all day, but none were bigger than his 59-yard completion to Brennan Keefe for another score.

The 3rd quarter saw another scoreless stalemate, nevertheless, Mass Maritime started the 4th quarter with a beautiful seven-minute possession. This not only burned seven valuable minutes for the Bulldogs, but it also ended with another seven points for the Buccaneers. They went back to Proctor for this drive, and he was able to put together another great series running for another 28 of his eventual 79 rushing yards. This was eventually capped off with a touchdown for Proctor, giving Mass Maritime a 28-0 lead and that’s how the game ended.

The Dean Bulldogs fall to 0-2, and will play host to Westfield State in a MASCAC conference matchup Saturday September 20th, at Dale Lippert Field.
