At Dean News Network, students become reporters, producers, and anchors. DNN Is a student driven newsroom that covers everything from campus updates to national headlines.
Each show has its own personality. In "Liberty Politics", they take on the week's biggest political stories, while "The Neutral Zone" focuses on Bruins hockey and NHL coverage. Students pitch stories, scripts, and then go on camera to deliver all the news.
The President of DNN, Jason Wilson gave a testimonial and overview of the club. He said, “Reporting/working for DNN is exciting because it's every week finding a new topic. Scripting and finding ways to make it both informative and entertaining. The challenge may be those things, but the true excitement is working alongside a wonderful crew that is happy to lead and create their own segments!"
He added, "When it comes to the writing aspect members have gotten a lot better at scripting and keeping thing conversational instead of robotic. With scripting, you have to add personality, it's best to talk out loud while typing or even voice to text to make the subject sound like they're truly speaking to the viewer.
Lastly, DNN gives students a true creative avenue to get their foot in the door for content creation. Whether it be basic anchoring, comedic segments, student on the street, or even just talking about something you love and are passionate about, students gain the opportunity to be their true selves on camera with a true freedom of expression!”
The best part is that it feels like a real newsroom. Students work under broadcast title deadlines, use professional teleprompters, and edit segments for DNN. DNN prepares aspiring journalists, sport broadcasters, and media professionals for the fast-paced world of communications. This is all while amplifying student voices.
