French Protests Erupt in Violence Show a Contrast to Political Climate at Home

French protests have been erupting in the recent week due to concerns about education and economic affordability in France. These issues are valid concerns, however, there is no justification for violence. As background, the taxation rates in France have made people’s earnings scarcer. This has also contributed to deficiencies in the French educational system. These problems have accelerated even more because the ongoing Iran War has made goods and resources more expensive.

The protests in many areas have turned into riots. These riots have damaged infrastructure like stores, monuments, and historical landmarks. The French government has responded with strongly worded condemnations and by mobilizing law enforcement to calm the riots. Meanwhile, in the United States, political tensions remain high, but citizens have not stooped to violence. This is likely because midterm elections are just around the corner.
The Dean Daily asked students what they thought of the French riots and they said, “It looks terrible. I feel bad for the country” and “I can see why they feel upset.” These opinions could also hold true for people in the United States. Regardless, the French riots are still ongoing, and the U.S. is approaching a pivotal point for itself.
