Speed & Strategy: Bulldogs Outpace NEC in 1-0 Victory
In a tightly contested Great Northern Athletic Conference (GNAC) clash at Grant Field, the Dean College Bulldogs women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over New England College (NEC) on Saturday.
Dean's aggressive, high-tempo playstyle and tactical execution defined the match, capped by senior defender Kassidy Martin's coolly converted penalty in the 68th minute to seal the win for the Bulldogs.
Before the match, Dean’s Lydia Fernandes laid out the team's mindset and the squad's high-tempo strategic approach. “We plan to have a very fast tempo because we know that NEC does not play quickly,” Fernandes explained ahead of kickoff. “They do not really want to move the ball around a lot, so we're going to try and break between the lines with some of the combos we've been working on in training.”
Fernandes then went on to emphasize the unit's focused mindset entering the contest: “The mindset is that we need a win. We need to score and be better in the attacking third this game by getting the ball in our forwards' feet since they are fast on and off the ball”. From the opening whistle, the game plan paid off immediately.

Dean controlled the pace and outshot NEC 6-2 in the first half, driven by Kacie Consolini’s persistent attacks towards goal, registering 2 first half strikes that beat the keeper only to bounce off the frame of the goal via the crossbar and posts.
Sophomore Colleen McIntyre provided a spark off the bench midway through the first and all through the second half, adding two shots as the Bulldogs kept the pressure piling in search of a breakthrough.
The relentless pressure culminated in the 68th minute when NEC conceded a penalty. Senior Kassidy Martins stepped up and calmly buried the kick into the bottom left corner past the outstretched gloves of NEC keeper Estrella Michaelidis.
Dean keeper Danielle Reinhard was given the nod in net and backed it up with a clean sheet, with only 3 shots faced and no goals allowed.
With the 1-0 victory, the Bulldogs improve to 2-5-1 overall (1-2-0 GNAC) and hope to obtain another win as they prepare for a road game against Nichols College on Monday at 3 PM in Dudley, Mass.
