Teacher Spotlight: Professor Dawn Mendoza
Looking for a Fun Elective? Give As Good as Your Word a Try!
At Dean College, students have the opportunity to take classes that allow them to explore their interests and try something new. One of these classes is As Good as Your Word, taught by Professor Dawn Mendoza. You do not have to be an English major to enjoy the opportunity to create new pieces of writing and explore your ideas. As someone who takes the class as an elective, I enjoy having the chance to be creative while learning in an engaging classroom environment.
What makes this class stand out is the opportunity to be creative and explore writing in a new way. Mya Tompkins states “she has always loved creative writing, and I feel like this class has helped me expand on my abilities while staying a fun class.” Instead of simply completing assignments, students get to develop their ideas and create original pieces. Whether students are taking the course as an elective or as part of their English major, it offers a chance to learn more about writing while discovering their own creativity.

A big part of what makes the class enjoyable is Professor Mendoza herself. She brings a welcoming and positive energy to the classroom, and one of my personal favorite things about her is her endearing smile she always has on in class. You can tell she is excited to teach and hear our ideas. She also has a wonderful way of keeping students active, engaged, and paying attention throughout class. Jeff Berlin stated, “It is a fun class. I have had other creative writing teachers but no one like Professor Mendoza. I like how she teaches the class; her teaching style helps make the classroom feel inviting and makes the learning experience more interesting.”
Professor Mendoza is also involved in writing beyond her classroom. Dean College names her as a Professor of English and the Director of the Berenson Writing Center. Her work at the college reflects her connection to writing and student learning.
Whether you already love writing or simply want to try something new, As Good as Your Word is worth looking into. You might discover a creative side you never knew you had!
