Sports Spotlight: Dean College Men’s Golf
Dean College has many athletic programs expanding from the aggressive American game of football to the ancient global phenomenon of soccer. Yet one team that should be heard more often is Dean's very own men’s golf team, who are having an incredible season and look to be a force to be reckoned with in the GNAC.
Originally beginning play all the way back in September of 2018, the program initially competed in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC), before moving to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) in 2021. From there they have made steady progress, becoming vastly more competitive by the year.
Flash forward to now, and the team has never looked better. One thing Coach Erik Chipman has greatly improved over the last year has been squad depth. Captain Dawson DiBarri, a junior, said, “Our depth has been awesome, last year we had to stick to the same 5-6 guys competing every tournament no matter how their game felt. This year we have already had 8-9 guys compete in tournaments and do really well in them."

So far, 2026 has already shown great success from the Bulldogs amounting to several, personal and program records for the golfers. One of which includes Freshman Anthony Cermele’s new program record of 69 (-2) set in a home match with Lasell University on September 6th, an incredible feat for the rookie to begin his collegiate career with. He would then also go on to win GNAC men’s golf rookie of the week. This all goes to show just how talented the young pool of players is at Dean.
Cermele even commented on his growth stating, “I have grown as a player, playing college golf has really helped me improved my game. It also helped me achieve breaking the dean college golf record."
Freshmen, however, aren’t the only ones setting feats this season. At the second Mitchell College invite on September 16th, Sophomore Captain Troy Evans secured his first career medalist honors, shooting an impressive 75 (+4) to help the Bulldogs place second overall that day. Even last year when Evans was a freshman, he got a top 20 individual placement in that year’s GNAC tournament. It testifies to the reliability and consistency these young athletes possess.
Suffice to say that Coach Erik Chipman is currently building a program that will stand the test of time, bolstering a team that not only has great young and eager talent, but also experienced veterans who will guide and show the younger side what it truly means to be a Bulldog.
Troy Evans said, “Yes, I’m hopeful for more success in the future, because we have an extremely talented roster of young golfers. Coach Chipman has also put the team in a position to succeed for many years to come along with the athletic department.”
Between the talented and diverse players, all the way up to the strategic and well renowned coaching staff, and even the athletic departments support of the team through accessibility to training and resources, the Dean College men’s golf team will almost certainly be a name you won't stop hearing in the following months and even more years to come under this talent and management.
The Bulldogs return to the fairway with their final regular season game in Valley Country Club in Rhode Island for the Rhode Island College invite on October 1st, before heading up to Vermont for the GNAC tournament starting on October 5th where they will surely find success and many more victories to come.
